Quickbooks PDF printing issue

One of the biggest issues in upgrading to Windows 7 that I've experienced is with 64bit drivers, old printers, all-in-one printers, scanning and Quickbooks pdf printing.

This the reason from the QuickBooks support pages: "The QuickBooks PDF Converter settings are not compatible with some settings on some 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Vista, or XP operating systems." (This link also has the link to the solution that I used today.)

In a previous installation, the customer was using QuickBooks 2009 and upgraded to QuickBooks 2011 and that fixed the problem.  Upgrading to the lasted release is the number one recommended solution, but not everyone is willing or able to do that. Today I used the QuickBooks PDF Diagnostic Tool on a QuickBooks 2008 installation.

When I ran the tool, it opened a DOS window with the message, Please wait while the diagnostic checks for issues.... and then indicated that I should test QuickBooks and if I couldn't create a PDF or email a PDF document from within QuickBooks then I should follow the steps on the web page that would open shortly.  When I clicked OK, the web page opened, but the diagnostic didn't close.  Normally I'd click the diagnostic DOS screen closed and try the test, but I left it open this time thinking that it may actually be monitoring the PDF creation process.

When I opened QuickBooks, the PDF creation worked fine and I was also able to send PDFs via email without a hitch.  This worked very nicely.  Kudos to Intuit.

When I closed the web page, the diagnostic also closed, so apparently it was monitoring the status of that window.  The only thing I noticed was the PDF printer for QuickBooks was set as default which caused problems with other printing.  I set the original printer back to being default and QuickBooks continued to work correctly.  All is well that ends well.
