Joomla templates that show compatibility with Postgresql 8.3.18 will not work

As I look through the many templates that have the word Postgresql on it, I note they have a familiar phrase which just happens to be copied directly from the Joomla announcement page for Joomla 3.0.

MySQL 5.1 +; MSSQL 10.50.1600.1 +; PostgreSQL 8.3.18 +

Don't believe it. Joomla 3.0+ is compatible with a few issues, but for the most part. Meaning you can install the base package. I have not found a single template that is compatible right off the web. They have all required some modification to get them to install. The problem is MySQL syntax. MySQL's current versions are more compatible these days with standard SQL statements, but developers of these templates insist on using the MySQL specific syntax which renders the statements useless in other SQL databases and therefore the templates can't be used.

Here is a recent error message that I got while trying to load T3 Frameworks which has the compatibility phrase above:

Database query failed (error # %s): %s SQL=UPDATE m2eij_extensions SET `enabled`='1' WHERE `type`='plugin' AND `folder`='system' AND `element`='t3'

One support web site that claims to support Joomla 3.x, complained that the client wasn't providing the error message so he couldn't fix it. The problem is simple. No one but MySQL uses accent marks to enclose any value that represents a field name. The accent marks are not required, yet developers continue to use it. The accent marks are only around the field names and would be an easy fix. Just search and replace every accent mark with nothing and both MySQL and Postgresql would work fine. Of course, that's only the tip of the iceberg. Postgresql is case sensitive and problems crop up with field names that have mixed case. Another problem is usernames. Those would be case sensitive also which can cause problems if the web didn't force the case on that field. Obviously that could have impact on other fields and searching blogs for information.

The problem is that developers are not using the features provided by Joomla when creating queries. There are functions which ensure database compatibility, but it's just easier for developers to write out the SQL statements and execute them without going through the function breakdown. They claim they are "extending" MySQL features when they do this, but I think it's just plain laziness.

I like one client's comments on the support page I read.

"There are two ways to fix this. One is to stop advertising that the template is 3.x compatible if it won't load in Postgresql as well as MySQL. And the other is for Joomla to stop supporting Postgresql."

Certainly the template designers are not supporting it.

I bought a Windows 7 home premium installation key from them with the image. I was downgrading from Windows 8 because the client was really annoyed with the missing start button (the start button in Windows 8.1 is bogus. It just opens the metro panel. There's no menu under it.). By all accounts the downgrade should not be an issue, but I couldn't find anywhere on how to do that downgrade. Windows 8 doesn't come with product keys because they use an machine id to track the installations (At least the OEM versions don't.).

They take several hours before they send the key. I don't know if this is because the process the orders manually or not. They say it is to verify the credit card info. 

I bought the SP1 package so I went to digitalriver and downloaded the package they have on the site. When I got the key, it didn't work and the email had a different digitalriver ISO to download. I assumed, like other Microsoft products that different releases of the same version of software required different keys. So I started over. After installing the image they sent me, I got the same error. Immediately, I thought - bogus.

I called the number on the receipt they sent me (888) 859-9178 which was disconnected. Another flag. The receipt offers support by calling them or chatting with their tech support, but gives no links to do either. Another flag. I finally used the number which is on their site, but difficult to find: (888) 323-5991. No one answers. I had to leave a message which ended up only being a disgruntled message with no phone number or order number.

My next call was to the bank to cancel the payment. It was still processing so the bank couldn't do anything about it. I went looking for a Microsoft number to call to find out if it was legit. Then remembered a chat tab at the bottom of the contact us page of their web site, so I decided to refresh the page and managed to get a person... finally.

While I was chatting with them, they called me back. I thought that was odd since I didn't leave a number, then I remembered they probably have caller id. I told the lady on the phone that I was in a chat session with them. She got my order number (so she could identify me with that disgruntled message) say she talked to me. Then the chat person said that some times you have to use the phone activation. That's not a good thing either. Another flag.

Anyway, the phone activation worked, but they asked one additional question: how many installations this key was used on. Since I don't know any but the one I'm installing, I said one. Microsoft probably also recorded my caller ID.

I leave you to make your own decision as to whether Designer Tech Software is legit or not. It seems obvious they are selling used software which I don't know if it's an issue, but it sure is troublesome.

Trillian Account is Constantly Offline

Just had an ongoing issue with Trillian. All of the other IM accounts I added were connecting except the Trillian account which is required if you want to stay up-to-date. The trillian account also publishes your other account settings so any trillian device will be updated, so this connection is important.

The closest thing I could find to my problem was this post:

The last entry suggests checking the port. That user set it to 443, but that's where mine was already set.

To get to the port settings (and the password settings) go to the Trillian pull down menu and select "Manage Accounts." Then click on the account name where it says <accountname> via Trillian. A window will open that will allow you to set your password. There is also a button that says Disconnect/Connect and one the says Settings.  In the settings screen on the Server settings near the top of the page, I have "Use DNS to discover server" selected. The hostname is, but I didn't set that. The port said 443 but that wasn't working. What I did was click the reset button which changed the port to 3158.

Once that new port number was present, I was able to connect Trillian again and was immediately notified that there was an update to be downloaded and installed.
